Organization for the New Year

A new year doesn't have to mean a full overhaul of your life. The most effective systems are the ones that feel natural, intuitive, and beautifully integrated into your everyday environment.

A new year doesn't have to mean a full overhaul of your life. In fact, the most effective systems are the ones that feel natural, intuitive, and beautifully integrated into your everyday environment. As an interior designer, I believe organization should not only function well—it should also look good and make your spaces feel calmer and more inviting. Follow along as we discuss some multifunctional ideas for storage and organization that will help your home become a wellness-focused retreat, enabling you to thrive this year.

Below are simple, easy-to-implement systems to help you start your year feeling grounded, productive, and in control.

1. Create a Calm Entryway Command Center

Your entryway sets the tone for your day—and your home. A streamlined, intentional "command center" keeps daily essentials from piling up and gives everything a dedicated, attractive home.

  • A small tray or bowl for keys
  • A wall-mounted mail organizer
  • Hooks for bags/jackets
  • A pretty basket for shoes
  • A decorative lamp for warmth and function

Think:

By designing this space thoughtfully, you eliminate daily clutter and create a welcoming moment every time you step inside. Your home becomes your wellness, warmth and reinvigorating space.

Designer Tip: Keep surfaces visually light by limiting the entry table to three functional items—a tray, a lamp, and a single decorative object.

2. Streamline Your Weekly Work Flow

Cluttered workdays often stem from not having a predictable structure. Instead of attempting a total overhaul, start with one simple ritual: a 10-minute weekly reset. Take the time to breathe deep, focus on the priorities of the week and celebrate when you accomplish these! Remember that home is where you can recover and rest so plan some time for you in your reset.

Every Sunday evening or Monday morning:

  • Review your top priorities
  • Block time for what matters most
  • Clear your desk
  • Choose a weekly focus theme (ex: "admin," "creative," "systems," etc.)

This small habit prevents overwhelm and allows your work life to flow more naturally.

Designer Tip: Use a single, beautiful planner or digital calendar—not multiple tools. Design your system as intentionally as you design your home.

3. Reset Your Daily Spaces with One Five-Minute Rule

A beautifully designed space loses its calm the moment everyday clutter takes over. The easiest way to stay ahead of it? The Five-Minute Reset will eliminate the need to declutter at the end of every month or year.

Choose three key areas:

  • Kitchen counters
  • Living room surfaces
  • Bedroom nightstands

Set a timer for five minutes at the end of the day and reset those areas only—no more, no less. This keeps your home fresh without requiring hours of cleaning. Keeping a minimalist mindset helps this process remain sustainable.

Designer Tip: Use trays and baskets in high traffic areas to catch clutter and keep commonly needed cleaning products handy. These can make end-of-day resets relaxing instead of overwhelming.

4. Choose One Organizational Upgrade Per Month

Instead of overwhelming yourself with a total-home refresh, choose one area each month to elevate:

  • January – Your closet
  • February – Your bathroom drawers
  • March – Your pantry
  • April – Your digital files
  • …and so on.

By the end of the year, you'll have transformed your entire life with small, manageable improvements.

Designer Tip: Always begin by adjusting, improving, decluttering or organizing one category—not the entire space. For example: shoes first, then tops, then accessories. It keeps the process easy and satisfying. Step back and look at the progress, pat yourself on the back and enjoy the benefits of being organized!

5. Make Home Organization Beautiful

When your systems are visually pleasing, they're far easier (and more enjoyable) to maintain. Invest in a few elevated details that please your senses. When you not only see the organization but also the beauty, it will cause your heart to feel happy, your calm to re-center and emotional wellness to rise:

  • Matching storage bins
  • Pretty labels
  • Glass jars for pantry staples
  • Neutral color palettes
  • Textured baskets

A beautiful system feels intentional and instantly raises the aesthetic of the room.

Designer Tip: Stick to one material palette (wood + white, or black + wicker, etc.) for an instantly cohesive look.

6. Anchor Your Day With a Wellness Moment

Organization isn't just about your home—it's also about your mind and energy. A simple daily wellness ritual organizes your internal world the way a good storage system organizes your external one.

Try:

  • A two-minute morning stretch
  • A slow cup of tea without your phone
  • Five deep breaths before opening your laptop
  • A midday walk
  • A gentle wind-down ritual at night

These small practices regulate your mind and help you move through the day with ease.

Designer Tip: Create a tiny wellness corner—perhaps a candle, a soft throw, or a tray with tea essentials—so your environment naturally invites calm.
